Why Summerhouse?
My two favorite places are vacation and home.
As I began designing art for my debut surface pattern collections, I pulled on memories from our family travels and local adventures. Daily walks to the boat dock, after-dinner evenings on the beach and favorite annual vacations to gorgeous destinations.
Vacations last a week at a time, then we’re whisked back into reality. We look back on our days away, and begin the countdown to the next getaway.
And all those days in between are just regular life – which is wonderful and beautiful and full of it’s own sense of chaotic adventure. But! What if we filled our home with subtle nods to those favorite places?
It quickly makes home our favorite destination.
No more waiting for departure dates and weekends – but choosing to live and fill your home now in a way that makes every moment matter. Yes, every moment can matter if we want it to. Every moment can inspire our hearts and fill us with joy that leads us into the responsibilities of our day.
I’m a wife and mom above all else. Anyone with similar titles can attest there are routines and chores that do not feel very joyful on their own. Laundry, the 30 minute rush before dinner, scavenging the refrigerator for our own lunches that don’t involve the kids’ snacks. None of it feels exciting and can quickly send us into a spiral leading us to believe we NEED a vacation. We NEED to escape the mundane that has become our reality.
Unless… we purposefully weave design and intention into those chores.
A beautiful wallpapered laundry room invokes an instant smile. An effortless, yet gorgeous placesetting transports family dinner to a memorable experience. Patterned dishware that reminds you of last year’s vacation says you are worthy of a pulled together lunch.
Life is too short to wait for happy moments to land in front of us – or feel like an occasional commodity. Simple swaps and additions, plus a new mindset, result in a framework that truly makes life beautiful. There’s less focus on how to do it – and more time to just enjoy it.
So why “Summerhouse”?
It’s the intersection of vacation and home. A “summer house” (2 words) by definition is basically a home away from home. But my idea of “Summerhouse” is to bring the vacation home. Weave the two together so we live like we’re on vacation. Equal parts playful and sophisticated, every Summerhouse pattern must pass the “does this feel like vacation?” test. It’s simple. It’s subtle. It’s Summerhouse style.
Summerhouse was designed to weave surprises of delight through our home and daily routine. I look forward to seeing the joy these patterns create when woven into homes and vacation homes coast to coast.
